I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is leaking, turn the water off at the nearest isolating valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you cannot locate the water main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on the cold faucets inside and out to help depressurise the household pipework and reduce the leak.

Once that’s done, give us a ring, no matter what the day or time is. We will be there rapidly to resolve the problem.

While waiting for our emergency plumber to arrive, remove any important items, mop up any water, and position a container to catch drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
