I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If there is water still leaking, turn off the isolating valve to the appliance or fixture if possible, or go immediately to the main water valve for your property. If you’re unable to locate the water valve to turn off, then you may want to try turning on all the cold water taps inside and outside the residence to depressurise the pipework and minimise the leak.

Once you have stopped the problem from growing, give our emergency plumber a ring, at any time of the day or night. We will be there rapidly to resolve the problem.

While waiting, remove any important possessions from the area, and mop up any water or put a bucket to catch the drips. If you’ve turned the mains water off, also switch off the heating for the hot water as well.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!

You may have been shown it as a stopcock, isolating valve or toby. This valve is normally located on the boundary near the road, usually under a blue or black plastic cover.
