I have a plumbing emergency, what should I do?

What do you do when a plumbing emergency arises? The very first thing is to ensure it's safe, and hopefully not getting even worse. Electricity and water do not combine safely, so if you need to, turn the mains switch off at the power panel.

If water is still leaking, turn the water off at the nearest valve and then at the mains valve outside. If you can’t find the main valve or a tap to the appliance, then turn on all the cold taps inside and out to depressurise the household pipework and reduce the leak.

While you wait for our emergency plumber, remove any significant things, mop up any water, and place a container to catch any drips. You should also switch off the hot water heating if the main water is turned off.

Help, I don’t know where the main water shutoff valve is!
